The first documented commercial remote backup system was deployed in June of 1985 for a medical group’s prenatal unit in Memphis, Tennessee. Rob Cosgrove, founder and CEO of Remote Backup Systems, built the first remote backup system using scripts and FTP to send the hospitals’ data from telephones modems to an offsite computer. According to The Online Backup Guide for Service Providers, a lightning storm struck the prenatal small Netware Server destroying its critical data.
